A work by choreographer and director Fabrizio Monteverde – which made its debut at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa in 1989 for the Balletto di Toscana and was remounted in 2002 by the Balletto di Roma – over the last 20 years Juliet and Romeo has proved to be one of the most successful productions in the Balletto di Roma repertoire with a record number of performances and box-office takings. With more than 350 performances in Italy and abroad and more than 200.000 spectators, it is the most acclaimed Italian ballet work ever and it is revived today to celebrate its 20th anniversary with the Balletto di Roma: the dance of impossible love, full of the wisdom of time and the energy of the present, reborn in the post-covid era. An original dramaturgical rewriting, shot through with the restless frames of neo-realist cinema and autonomous in the introspection of the characters, Fabrizio Monteverde’s work denudes the Shakespearian plot and exposes its cynical and angry sentiment, so close to his own choreographic impetus.
