Liao Changyong is the most distinguished baritone in modern China, an internationally renowned opera performer and vocal music educator. Currently the president of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, he is also a professor, academic leader, doctoral supervisor, deputy of the National People’s Congress of China, member of the National Committee for Education, Science, Culture and Public Health, president of the Shanghai Musicians’ Association, vice-president of the China Musicians’ Association and the Shanghai Musicians’ Association. He is the director of the China Vocal Music Art Centre and has dedicated himself to promoting the culture of Chinese art songs through their discovery, dissemination and promotion.
Hartmut Höll has become one of the most sought-after pianists for chamber music collaboration. With Changyong, he has curated a selection of Chinese-language art songs composed since 1920 under European influence, setting poems from a thousand-year-old tradition to music.
