New setup
Based on the Shakespearean tragedy, I Capuleti e i Montecchi was composed by Vincenzo Bellini in just under two months and was the result of yet another meeting with librettist Felice Romani. The opera was an immediate success and was programmed in major Italian theatres, hardly ever suffering, unlike other titles, from periods of poor programming. Re-elaborating a text created a few years earlier for Nicola Vaccaj’s Giulietta e Romeo, Bellini reserved the part of Romeo for a mezzo-soprano voice, tracing a tradition of en travesti roles that was almost in disuse at the time, but still strongly present in Italian theatres.
The role will be played by Brescian mezzo-soprano Annalisa Stroppa, an assiduous performer of the role of Romeo and a frequent protagonist on European stages. Interpreting Juliet instead will be the voice of Caterina Sala, a young light lyric soprano now present in the major festivals dedicated to belcanto, as well as winner of the AsLiCo Competition. The part of Tebaldo will instead be sung by Matteo Falcier, already present in OperaLombardia productions in the past and a solid point of reference for the light lyric tenor register.
Conducting the opera will be Sebastiano Rolli, a baton that has been present for years in the major Italian theatres and an expert in the bel canto repertoire, having already tackled almost all of Bellini’s and Donizetti’s major operas. The staging of this new production will be by Andrea De Rosa: in the course of his career he has collaborated in Italy and abroad with leading conductors including Riccardo Muti, Valery Gergiev, and Myung Wung Chung. An assiduous attendee of twentieth-century theatre, the director will cast his gaze on Shakespearean tragedy as a fine interpreter not only of opera titles but also of prose performances.
The co-production will involve not only the theatres of OperaLombardia, but also the Fondazione I Teatri di Reggio Emilia.
