Fatoumata Diawara is back performing in Como, city where she lives and has built her family. She will present Fenfo, the album that earned her two Grammy Award nominations in 2019, co-produced by Diawara and Matthieu Chedid and recorded between Mali, Burkina Faso, Barcelona and Paris.
Hailed as one of the main standard-bearers of modern African music, Fatoumata Diawara takes her art to fresh and electrifying heights with this album, which translates as “something to say”.
Boldly experimental but respectful of her roots, this record defines her as the voice of the young African woman, proud of her heritage but with a vision that looks confidently to the future and a universal message.
As modern storytellers, the eleven songs in Fenfo – sung mainly in the Bambara language – deal with timeless topics such as respect, humility, love, migration, family and how to build a better world for our children. “I did not want to sing in English or French because I wanted to respect my African heritage” – explains Fatou – “But I wanted a modern sound because that is the world I live in. I am a traditionalist, but I also need to experiment. You can keep your roots and influences, but communicate them in a different style”.
NEGUE NEGUE is a fun song, which urges everyone to share happiness and love in the family and all around. Fatoumata Diawara uses this opportunity to call on young people to join hands and to work to make this world a better place. She also pays tribute to the one and great Fela Kuti and the famous #afrobeat sound!
